Back in the good old 80's, a whole hoopla of fads seemed to emerge out of nowhere to settle the needs (or wants) for people like me, the consumer population. One trend which seemed to bolster its own fan base overnight, involved a marketing symbol and a popular Marvin Gaye song. Of course I'm referring to the California Raisins! Initially intended as a marketing campaign for the distribution of raisins, the CR's exploded onto the scene and accomplished far more than anyone would have expected. Their slogan eventually became known as "The World Tour". You name it, they had it. Anywhere from the classic California Raisin figurines to a pair of novelty slip-ons! I can even remember buying a pair of neon orange CR sneakers at the end of an ice-capades show in Vancouver which included the raisins. Wish my mom hadn't thrown them out like she did to all my other childhood toys. But yeah....the raisins definitely became a cultural icon overnight with their sassy tunes and sought after collectibles. I'm sure most people owned at least SOMETHING associated with the raisins, growing up in the 80's.

But one thing people never got to own was a copy of "The Grape Escape", an NES game based on the California Raisins. Scheduled to be released back in 1991, the game was even featured in Game Players Magazine a long with an in depth walkthrough. Why this game never saw the light of day is a mystery to all of us. Maybe by 1991, all the raisin hype had died down and Capcom thought the public eye would see right through their marketing scheme if they released the game when they did. No one really knows for sure…
For 13 some odd years the CR prototype had been laying dormant perhaps in a basket of misfit games, just waiting, for one lucky person to discover it. Well that one lucky person named Brandon Murphy made a daunting discovery while hanging out at a local Videogame shop in South East Florida. Nesplayer wrote an excellent article on an interview they had with Brandon Murphy, when the whole story transpired. You can check that out here.
Now, thanks to Brandon Murphy the California Raisins are back, in their newest adventure yet. Almost 13 years since their scheduled release the nes community and fans alike, FINALLY have the chance to experience this game first hand!
